In this week’s Kraken Cryptid Mini-Sode, we’re heading back into the strange world of Fearsome Critters and meeting one of the absolute weirdest creatures we’ve come across yet: the Duck-Footed Dum-Dum.
This bizarre lumberwoods legend supposedly shows up every spring with giant duck feet, TWO tails, and a back built like a drum. And apparently, it has one very important job… making sure the fish know when it’s time to spawn. Yep. You read that right.
We dive into the original 1920s tale from Art Childs’ Yarns of the Big Woods, break down what the Dum-Dum supposedly looked like and did, and talk about why these ridiculous creatures became such a big part of American lumberjack folklore.
Is the Duck-Footed Dum-Dum a real cryptid? Hell no. But is it one of the most entertaining Fearsome Critters we’ve covered? DUM. DUM. DUM. Absolutely.
